Need a local band? There’s an app for that!
With the rise of technology and the popularity of apps, I should not be so surprised that there is an app that helps connect people to local artists, but I was. The app, Gigtown, allows local artists in San Diego, Los Angles, New Orleans, and Austin, to sign up and market themselves. The idea came about a father and son who realized how difficult it was to find and book a local artist for a charity event. With the need out there, Gigtown was born, and has helped musicians connect and find work in a much easier way. Once an artist has signed up, they are able to create artist pages where they can post their rates and upload content. This can be sorted by genre and area. While there are only four cities where artists can sign up at the moment, they are working on adding cities and even add a geolocation function. I know that this is something I will look forward to seeing in Miami very soon! This app would help the Miami music scene very much. There are so many local groups around that fall under so many different genres and this app would help organize it all. All in all, this app is awesome because it focuses on the artists and helps them make money.
Unconventional Marketing in the Music Industry
In this article, it goes over five examples of unconventional music marketing strategies that artists can do. The most important thing is that as long as it feels natural and authentic to the band, then that is what is best for the artists. It starts with making sure that the day the album will be released has been carefully been selected. For example, White Mystery has created like an unofficial holiday by releasing an album on the same day every year. This build-up allows for the fans to have something to look forward while also marketing the new material. On top of that, having unique merchandise can also help in building press as well as allowing the artist to have something specific to the artist. Something fresh and unseen can be a great thing. With this in mind, music videos are so common that films or short stories could be a nice alternative. All of this, however, should appeal to the fans. They are the ones that should be kept in mind. Another way to help reach more audiences would be to get craft alcohol or specialty coffee. While is this good for very famous artists, when one is starting out, it would probably be best to start off small. Local team ups with stores could work in everyone’s favor. Also, fans love being able to help their artists, so by teaming up with fans to create something would be extremely meaningful to them. Polls and contests can easily be made and shared on Twitter. I really believe that all of these strategies could be very successful as long as the artists never forget about the music. At the end of the day, the fans are fans because they enjoy the music and because they feel like they have a connection to it. I also think that social media should be used to the max. Social media really allows for artists to make personable connections with their fans. If all that is being posted is promotional content, then a connection opportunity is being missed. If an artist has great music, engages with fans, and offers so many ways to keep connecting, than they will break through and be a success.

Social Media and its affect on the Music Business
Nowdays, the music industry is super competitive. Because of the ability to stream nonstop music at low costs, podcasts, online shows, and uploaded songs, there is just so much of the industry in the hands of the audience. This change has allowed for fans to have access to more music and for smaller record labels to successful. It is no longer about being on the best label; it is about putting the best content out there for the audience to enjoy. This would then, hopefully, lead to the music going viral and being heard by hundreds of thousands of people. Social media has really helped push this along. Artists are now able to be in more control of what they are putting out there and even able to distribute their own music without being tied to a label. As long as people enjoy the content, the artist can be successful. On the other hand, this raises the standard and expectation while also increasing the competition. On top of that, there is now more access to music production software which allow for so many more artists to start creating music. While is this good for the audience as they can find more things that they enjoy, it can be difficult for the artist. I believe that the best thing that social media has done for the music industry is how it allows for the artist to connect with their audience more while also engaging and being in control of the content they are showcasing. Artists are now staying true to themselves because there is a market for that; someone out there will hear them and like it. This is also good for the audience that has so much more music to listen to instead of going with what is mainstream and heard on the radio. As artists, it is so important to keep up with all of the social media platforms so that they can keep getting more fans and engaging with the already established fans. Using hashtags, creating playlists, live streaming their music, showcasing the creation process, showing behind the scenes, and posting pictures are just some of the ways that artists can connect with their fans and build a following. All in all, as long as the artist stay on top of the social media changes and create good content, than there is an audience for that.
